On the evening of February 4, local time, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who visited the United States, said at a press conference after talks with US President Trump that he "believes that peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia is not only feasible, but will be achieved." Netanyahu said he is committed to that goal and believes Trump will do the same. Mr. Trump said he was about to visit Saudi Arabia.
However, the Saudi Foreign Ministry has now issued a statement reiterating its position that "Saudi Arabia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel unless an independent Palestinian state is established with East Jerusalem as its capital."
It is understood that one of the key topics of the talks between Netanyahu and Trump is to promote the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Earlier, before re-entering the White House, Trump said that he hoped to use the Gaza ceasefire agreement as an opportunity to get Saudi Arabia to join the Abraham Accords. In his last term, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords, which helped normalize relations between four Arab countries, namely the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco and Israel.
